Past Continuous Tense Examples
English:
Past Continuous tense is used to talk about an action that was happening at a particular time in the past.
Hindi:
Past Continuous Tense का उपयोग उस काम के लिए होता है जो भूतकाल में किसी समय चल रहा था।
Structure

Subject + was / were + verb+ing
Hindi
Subject + रहा था / रही थी / रहे थे

1. Affirmative (सकारात्मक)
Structure:
Subject + was/were + verb(ing) + object
Examples:
- I was reading a book.
→ मैं किताब पढ़ रहा था। - She was cooking dinner.
→ वह रात का खाना बना रही थी। - They were playing football.
→ वे फुटबॉल खेल रहे थे। - We were watching a movie.
→ हम फिल्म देख रहे थे।
2. Negative (नकारात्मक)
Structure:
Subject + was/were + not + verb(ing) + object
Examples:
- I was not reading a book.
→ मैं किताब नहीं पढ़ रहा था। - She was not cooking dinner.
→ वह रात का खाना नहीं बना रही थी। - They were not playing football.
→ वे फुटबॉल नहीं खेल रहे थे। - We were not watching a movie.
→ हम फिल्म नहीं देख रहे थे।
3. Interrogative (प्रश्नवाचक)
Structure:
Was/Were + subject + verb(ing) + object?
Examples:
- Was I reading a book?
→ क्या मैं किताब पढ़ रहा था? - Was she cooking dinner?
→ क्या वह रात का खाना बना रही थी? - Were they playing football?
→ क्या वे फुटबॉल खेल रहे थे? - Were we watching a movie?
→ क्या हम फिल्म देख रहे थे?
4. Negative-Interrogative (नकारात्मक प्रश्नवाचक)
Structure:
Was/Were + subject + not + verb(ing) + object?
Examples:
- Wasn’t I reading a book?
→ क्या मैं किताब नहीं पढ़ रहा था? - Wasn’t she cooking dinner?
→ क्या वह रात का खाना नहीं बना रही थी? - Weren’t they playing football?
→ क्या वे फुटबॉल नहीं खेल रहे थे? - Weren’t we watching a movie?
